Regional Contest

Three students from school districts across the Northern Tier region participated in the 2022 Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition, which was held virtually. Students recorded three poem recitations and submitted them to be scored by a panel of judges. Judges included Rachel Murphy, Alan Miller, Judith Sornberger, and Katie Wisnosky. Student recitations were judged on physical presence, voice & articulation, dramatic appropriateness, accuracy, and overall performance.

Micah Stouffer, a senior from Bloomsburg Christian School, won the 2022 Regional Contest. Micah won over the judges with his recitations of Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe ShelleyAt the Vietnam Memorial by George Bilgere, and Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden. Micah went on to participate in the Pennsylvania Poetry Out Loud State Finals, which were held virtually.

Also participating in the 2022 Regional Contest were Gwendolyn Greene from CHEF Co-op of Lycoming County, and Matt Glantz from Towanda Area Jr/Sr High School.

 

State Finals

One student from each of the 14 partner regions in Pennsylvania advances to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals, which are held at the State Museum in Harrisburg. The state champion receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, with a chaperone to compete in the National Finals. The champion’s school receives a $500 stipend to purchase poetry materials.

Mario Grugan, a senior from Tyrone Area School District in Huntingdon County was the 2022 Poetry Out Loud Pennsylvania State Champion.

National Finals

The National Finals are held in Washington D.C. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be given at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, including a $20,000 award for the National Champion.

Mia Ronn, a junior at the Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles, California, was the 2022 Poetry Out Loud National Champion.
